[20] Clinical studies have attempted to regulate VEGFR2 signaling in endothelial cells using intravitreal neutralizing antibodies to VEGF because these can be delivered safely in the premature infant eye with intravitreal injections. However, the intravitreal delivery of an antibody or fusion protein that binds the ligand, VEGF, does not allow specific regulation of VEGFR2 in endothelial cells since VEGF receptors on glia and neural cells are also affected.
